You would think that after seasons and seasons of amazing collections the designers will eventually run out of inspiration and all the acclaimed runways will remain empty. Lucky for us this will never happen as it seems that this summer has been very prolific for this industry. Embellishments, chiffon, geometric prints, neon and pastel colors, graffiti, fringes they all seem to have made their way up on the runways and eventually in our hearts and wish lists. Now prepare yourself: not only you will find out the hottest trends of the summer but you will also learn how to recreate them on a low budget and still look fabulous this summer!
Certainly on of the most known fashion events and the Mecca for any respectable “fashionista” the NY fashion week was, as always, both recreational and inspirational.
Carolina Herrera managed to dazzle with a futuristic collection showing off bold cuts, asymmetry and stunning silhouettes but at the same time oozing elegance and and something that can only be compared to a SF poise.
BCBG Max Azria came out with a relaxed safari inspired look, light fabrics and pastel colors, somehow successfully combining cutouts and layering to create a relaxed and modern look for hot summer days.
Another pleasant surprise was represented by DKNY showing monochromatic jersey silk dresses and color-blocked outerwear ,casually paired with sneakers and flat shiny do’s , perfect for either a stroll in the park or a cocktail party with a twist.
As usual the Herve Leger collection was the epitome of sensuality bringing the crowd on its knees with the patterned, fitted signature dresses. This time however there were no bandage dresses, but the spotlight was stolen anyway by the gorgeous graphics sported on the dresses and the chic leather insertions.
In the end newcomer Mara Hoffman caught all the eyes with bold tribal and ethnic inspired patterns and intricate seams. The colorful collection and the stunning scenery that was created on the runway, makes her one of the designers to keep an eye on forever.

Inspiration –Valentino
The Valentino collection was a stunning mixture of architectural and Victorian styles. Long embellished dresses and a color palette to match were the main features. A high neck shirt combined with a fringed or a flow skirt, work great together especially in a solid/pattern combination along with a pair of earth-toned or nude sandals. To obtain a more polished look along with that Victorian inspired flair, add a cameo at the neck of the shirt as a finishing touch.
Inspiration-Chanel
Cutout shoulders seem to be a star trend this summer whether we are talking about dresses shirts or blouses. An all white outfit may seem to scream Labor Day but with the right accents it can whisper fashion week…The black and white geometric prints and accents on the dress work great with white knee socks and matching oxfords. For a grungier look you can opt for patterned over knees and a pair of clunky heels or accessorize it with a pair of interesting shades.
Inspiration – Ellie Saab
While Ellie Saab is mostly known for beautiful gowns, this pink outfit is both elegant and practical at the same time. The attention grabbing element is the combination of pink and coral shades, making up for a, bold, hard to miss appearance. Choose a pair of hot pink lightweight tailored pants and a sheer blouse, to create this summer look and play with shades of same color to create a fun , yet stylish effect. A pair of pearlescent or light colored pumps will allow this outfit to double as an evening one.
Inspiration –Jean-Paul Gaultier
Monochromatic outfits seem to have made a comeback this summer along with the unexpected fabric combinations. The leather vest is an item that, as we know never goes out of fashion and the times when only bikers had access to this infamous piece of clothing are thankfully, long gone .Combined with a high waisted , silky or sequined pencil skirt and nude stilettos , this kind of outfit looks great in caramel, bronze ,beige and even black and auburn for lighter skin tones. If you don’t like the idea of wearing a vest on bare skin, a nude bustier or tank top can help and still preserve sexy rugged look.
Inspiration-Giambattista Valli
Floral patterns are something nobody should miss out on this summer .Hard to believe you can create great outfits from something as mundane as a top and a skirt, yet Giambattista Valli shows us its possible .The secret lays in the twist that every piece has. Play with textures and shapes and keep the accessories at a minimum for a fashionable appearance. Add a pair of sky high pumps and consider yourself ready to hit the runway.
Inspiration-Emanuel Ungaro
Who says you have to bare a generous amount of skin in order to look sexy this summer? Well, you don’t. Tulle, chiffon, lace and other sheer materials will become your best friends this summer especially if they come in large doses and bright colors. Mint green, turquoise, aqua, fuchsia and magenta, they all look spectacular in combination with black or darker colors making an even more interesting contrast on a see-trough fabric. Choose a silted skirt and a dramatic make up to complete the look, and don’t be afraid to experiment with anything from flats to strappy stilettos.
